Hah, what a coincidence. I just submitted my masters thesis on such a
system. I'm using ultra-wideband to get positional localization (falling
back to GPS for lower-precision sensing when there are no UWB anchors)
and an IMU to do orientation. All the audio is in Unity3D and we're
using the 3DCeption spatialization engine, which sounds quite nice.
Currently all our sources are just mono, but the engine supports
ambisonic sources as well, and one of my colleagues has played around
with them a bit and was impressed.

Having sources that are fixed relative to the environment instead of
relative to your head makes a big difference in how realistic and
externalized they sound, though my experiments weren't really set up to
prove that experimentally (future work!) :)
