No, it's not always impossible to mend things. There are a variety of
utilities included to help identify problems and sort them out and often,
if you are methodical and follow the help file (assuming you can find it)
you can sort through it. It's a pain and you run into constant blocks, but
it's possible. I'm not sure if it's always so, but most things CAN be
mended, it's just easier to reinstall. Mend one thing and another goes
down as a result. Mend that and something else goes. If you get a clean
install, you can count on it lasting for a good two weeks before glitches
develop. If you can stand glitches, you're good for up to six weeks before
the whole things starts to tumble. After about three months, well, hope
you have backups.
If you never try new software and all your software is M$ approved and all,
it's possible to run win9.x indefinitely, so long as you reboot every 49.5
days.
They use it at the theatre, have a good ten computers networked, box
office, accounting, spreadsheets, word processing, graphics apps. Have M$
office and autocad, other things on various computers. Had a hardware
failure recently, the hard drive on the oldest pentium went down, but other
than that, they don't have problems. They installed this system a year ago.
Me, I've got a non-standard computer and am forever trying new things, my
computer is just barely capable.
I run into trouble constantly. It's a headache. When I can get my paws on
redhat linux and a computer to learn it on... I don't want to install it
on this one because I'll be completely helpless for a long time, have
nobody in my community to teach it to me. Without my net connection I'll
be lost.
bye,
