You said it yourself: WordPerfect. The WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.1
formats are probably the most common formatted-text standards in
the DOS world. They're considerably more compact than RTF or HTML.
And yes, the latest'n'largest version of Microsoft Word can read
and write these files.

Amusing fact: When you install Adobe Acrobat reader, the setup
program offers to fire up Notepad to display README.TXT. Hmmmm.
Amusing #2: RTF looks like a typo for RTFM. Nice acronym,
