Chad:
The controllers do not indicate how they encode (MFM/RLL).
That bit of information is provided by TheRef. It will also tell you
how long the card is, 8bit or 16bit, how many drives (2HD & 2FD or
only 2HD or 2FD) and if there is on board Bios.

If the onboard Bios is present, you can invoke them via Debug. If
not there are several Low Level Formatting Utilities (HDTEST.*) etc
which will do the job. Western Digital has some on its web site.

Once you invoke Debug you have to give the mem location where the
formatting routines are, which is usually [C800:...:...] If you run
MSD.EXE, select Utilities from the menu and from the drop_down
window select memory browser. It will show you the mem_address where
the routines begin. Once the LLF routines are initiated, respond to
the questions (about your drive).

If you post the make and model number of the controller (and HD)
some body can give you all the specs you need. Only the very early
controllers had jumpers to select the drive size. On the whole you
should not have worry about jumpers on the controller.
