I agree that I've never noticed a visual difference between MFM and RLL
controllers per se. You need to know the manufacturer/model number (which
should be on the card someplace) and then check it at a place like TheRef
<http://theref.c3d.rl.af.mil/> or the manufacturer's web site.

Or else you could put the controller in a PC, hook it up to an MFM/RLL drive
(one where there's no data you want to keep!), low-level/FDISK/format it and
see what you get. If you do that with an ST-225 and get 32MB, you have an RLL
controller. If you get 20MB, you have an MFM. That's what I had to do one
time when I could get no details on the controller.
