AFAIK, you can safely format an RLL drive to MFM. That
will only result in you getting less space. (ie, 21M
instead of 32M) It is generally not a good idea to do it
the other way around because the tolerances on the MFM
drives aren't tight enough.
I've never noticed any obvious visual difference in the
controller cards. I think you either have to try it out,
or check out the model number of the card. Maby there's a
certain chip to look for. I don't know.
I bet there's others on this list who can fill us in on
this. Mike Webb, or Brent Reynolds perhaps? (hint, hint)
