HTTP 1.1 saves heap and heaps of IP addresses. Now thousands of
"servers" can be addressed to one IP address. eg
http://hoody.virtualave.net/ is really on the server called
s3.virtualave.net.
] Indeed - and that's a problem: HTTP 1.1 allows for certain new "META"
] tags which however, are not defined in HTML (yet - and not even in the
] "transitional" HTML_4); and it's only 'certain' browsers which can make
] use of these,
Arachne and Lynx both support it. The <META HTTP-EQUIV="..."> tag is
an easy way to include extra "things" in the "headers" of the
document. eg The old fashioned way to redirect was to put
Refresh: 1;URL=http://whatever
in the header of the packet. Now you can put it in the HTML file.
] It is, in my opinion, sheer bandwidth waste: allows to load useless
] "graphical" screenfillups - I saw cases of 8 to nearly 30 KB - in order
] *only* to get the next, perphaps and maybe "real" URL (not necessarily
] the latter; crap can be nested ad infinitum).
Indeed, when using it there should only be something like "We are
redirecting you" instead of all that crap.
