Actually sat and thought about selling the computer and going back to arts
and crafts to spend my time....

So, start at the beginning, about a week ago, I decided to play with
partition magic, I'd heard and seen so much of it. Found free space, told
it to redistribute same across the drives. Well, after the dust settled I
had machine language in all 2nd level subdirectories on C: and nothing
below, my compressed drives "vanished" and no way I could boot. ~sigh~
Went to a bud's to borrow install disks, while there he gave me an old 6x
cdrom to install.
also passed me win98
back home I started trying various combinations to install the cdrom. Damn
thing rewrote the bios on me at some point, many hours of "isa error" that
I didn't understand. After much confusion I stumbled upon the bios and
noted the devastation. Whoopee! I'd actually written it down in detail
one day when messing with something else, and still had it in the little
folder.
Okay, reset all the settings.
Give up on cdrom and use the old backpack that can't use linux and is slow
and external and doesn't hook to sound card ~sigh~
I load up win98 and am on for about 24 hrs. Send a quick letter for cdrom
advice.
Something (not sure what) goes off.
Can't boot in, the system crashes utterly everytime I start up.
wipe c: and load win95
Same thing. I can get in via safe mode, not otherwise.
reload again, don't put anything in sys tray, nothing on startup.
one of the compressed drives, drive I:, is kerfuffled
run scandisk over and over and over again, as well compression manager, defrag
all fixed? okay, install cleensweep, oops, not all fixed, crashes repeatedly
Screw this, wipe drive again, reinstall win98 this time
Well, these details are off a bit, it's all kind of hazy, like after a
battle, there was even a point in there I cut my finger on a circuit board.
Also, somewhere in there, I got clever with the backpack. I switched the
cdrom unit inside it with the 6x and removed it from it's case, crammed the
mess inside the computer case and hacked a slot out the back for the cables
to come out, one to the plugin and the other to LPT1
Voila! internal cdrom and I even took a wire to the sound plug on the
soundcard. Haven't tested that one yet...
So, I'm tentatively running win98 with apparently, all the usual tsr's
(oops, gotta get the anti-virus up)
running and steady, just one strange glitch I can't figure.
 I have two folders I:\GRAPHICS\COREL\CUSTOM\PROFILES\
two in there, _____.___ and _____.__0 which "do not exist" so can't be
renamed or deleted 0mb each. marked as hidden files too. Will try
reinstalling corel on top of them and see what happens.
I have a few things to reinstall. Don't know how long this will last
either, could go all haywire again any moment?
So now that I've altered the case and peripheral equipment and shed blood
as well as reformatted and reinstalled several times, what grade am I in
now? Am I a true cyberchick? heheheheheh
bye,
