It's more than interesting; it's somewhat startling to me. I hadn't
realized that someone had tried to combine the best of DOS and UNIX, even
before Linux was developed by Linux Torvalds. The more I read the
documentation of VMiX, the more I want to try it out.
The most recent version of it on the Internet is at Simtel and Garbo. The
file is called vmix285.zip, so search for VMiX or this file name, and
you'll get it at these sites. There apparently is not a web site for it --
no doubt because it got lost in obscurity with the development of Linux and
Windows (the last version of VMiX goes back to July, 1993). The zipped
archive is only about one third of a megabyte, and unzipped, it expands to
about 1.2 megabytes.
It works with MS-DOS up to version 6.0, according to the documentation, and
Dr. DOS, too -- but I'm going to try it out with PC DOS 7.0 selected from
within a multiple configuration. Hopefully it'll work that way. (You have
to disable some of DOS's memory management and disk swapping before using
it; and you have to use VMiX's own ANSI emulator device, vmansi.com, instead
of ansi.sys.)
If, like the VMiX documentation says, it can be used (although not with the
same capabilities) even with an 8086/88, it has great value for those of us
in the SurvPC category who would like some of the benefit of a
UNIX/Linux-like system without leaving DOS as a primary operating system.
It's best multitasking features can be used with a 386 or above.
I hope we can still get in touch with the author of VMiX.
