Yes. Thats why you should try and use a 32 bit driver with Windows if
possible. These drivers don't need to be in real mode but the older
ones generally do. The 32 bit disk access for example can be twice as
fast.
I dont this its not too hard to switch, but it takes time. That's
[one reason] why W9x sucks; it still has a lot of real mode code so
the processor is not running at full speed. NT has little real mode
code so its faster.
So most of the work in '386 mode' but going backwards only when
needed.
PS: My old harddrive just couldn't handle 32 bit mode under any
Windows and totally and utterly crashed after a few days of normal
use. Then MS-DOS format couldn't format it because of the bad
sectors. But DR-DOS's fdisk had no problems at all.
BTW, did you here of the new processors from Intel? 810 family.
Apparently they don't even support ISA so there'll be speed increases
and cost decreases. [You can still get ISA by getting a convertor
daughterboard]
