Recalling a recent discussion here about use of disk managers if BIOS
lack support for HDs > 528 BM (or 504, whatever). I wonder if anyone
of you have heard of or tried the following solution - as
advertised on <http://www.unicore.com/lbapro.html> ?
According to this web page, their LBA PRO plug-in-card provides support
for drives up to 137GB. I'm not sure just how this works - or if it
actually does. But it made me curious.
Let me quote some from the above mentioned page:
LBA Pro
Enhanced IDE (EIDE) Support
Portable Form Factor
Support for Drives to 137 GB
32 Terabyte
Increased Data Transfer
CD-ROM Support
Enhanced IDE BIOS Extension
[...] Based on Unicore's leading edge BIOS technology, the LBA Pro
card provides the ability to support the new Enhanced IDE standard
without needing to upgrade your system BIOS or using memory hungry
and unreliable software drivers. The LBA Pro allows you to now
break the DOS and BIOS imposed limit of 528-MB capacity. The LBA
Pro is simple to use and requires no user interaction
[...] The LBA Pro card is a small plug-in card designed to fit into
a standard 8-bit XT/AT slot. Once installed, LBA Pro goes to work
immediately, automatically determining the installed drive
parameters in your system. No more fooling around with software
drivers, the LBA Pro does all the work.
[...] the LBA Pro supports PIO modes 3 and 4. This translates into
at least a doubling of effective data transfer rates from which you
are currently used to.
The page did not state any prices, but said to call a US number
( 1-800-800-BIOS (2467)) for current price .
Any comments / experience with this? Anyone know what it costs
(approx)? (I asked a local dealer about it, but he never heard of it,
he said. Besides - he was more anxious to sell me a new system - as -
mine seemed rather *outdated* - according to him. Btw I asked him for
some rails I needed to fit a 40 MB IDE disk in one of my computers...
and his first reaction was ...but but.but.. you can not install Win98
on that!!!???... and I said - no, you're absolutely right... but so
what?? He then stared at me as if I came from another planet (well I
guess I do, kid of, from a different world anyway ;-) - and I noticed
his eyes began to wander - in search for a a more *profitable*
customer.)
oh... and welcome *home* Eko! (hope you read this) Are you just
stoping by for a short visit , or do you plan a more permanent stay
this time? :-)
All the best,
Bjorn
