I agree - running without a HD on a 486DX2-80 (as I've reported every time
a speed issue has surfaced, so everyone who remembers can stop reading now)
was nearly as fast as on my P166. I did use the P166 HD via the network -
but beeing 5 people playing Quake wasn't hard at all on that hardware (we
later exchanged the DX2-80 to another P166).
*NO* need to shrink the screen or anything like that. (I did have to do
that on a IBM 386sx-16 playing DOOM via null-modem cable)
Besides, it doens't require DOS - there are Linux ports (but who was it
that I had that discussion with some half a year ago or so) and there's a
also a Windows "port" (it's around 5-10% slower then running the DOS version).
