Ants are a major problem here in the dry southern part of the
Philippines - the worst is a really teeny type that is fast
moving, migratory and likes to set up a sticky nest full of eggs
and such in any undisturbed piece of equipment - like Zip drives,
cameras, etc...

I've found what seems to be a solution - but wonder if anyone has
any horror stories to tell me before I get myself in some
unforseen trouble.

The solution is that whenever I have a piece of equipment open, I
tape a mothball to a vacant part of the chassis interior. Here,
these are usually Napthalene - but paradichloroBenzene (used for
bathroom "deodorizers") is said to repel not just insects but even
the small mice that seem like animate balls of dust they're so
small and light (and they chew insulation like you wouldn't
believe).

Now I know that aromatic hydrocarbons aren't the sort of thing you
should be breathing - possible cancer, lung problems, etc. But
the amount I am using doesn't seem to produce much noticeable
vapor outside the chassis in normal operations.

My question is - has anybody seen any problems occur to the
*hardware* from these types of chemicals?

Thanks,

Bob
