Hi David,

        Thanks for the info.

Do you think that the Bios on my 286 machine doesn't recognize or
support the size of my drive, which is 250MB? .. Its original setup was a
40MB Hdd. I was able to install the 250MB drive settings on a 286 bios (no
autodetection and no drive info) by copying the CMOS Drive settings on my
486 machine (I did install the 250 MB on the 486 just to have it
autodetected and then copy the info). I was able to run DOS after a couple
or more resets.

I have a question. Is it possible that the ROM (for 286 machines)
will malfunction if the computer is not give a warmboot or so for many
months or years?

        A big thanks..

RT>Hello to all,

RT>I have a couple of 286's machines, which I seldomly used 'caused I'm
having
RT>trouble of booting them. Both machines have 1mb, CGA and 250 MB HD. Both
RT>machine hangs after 1mb memory check and the worst is that doesn't even
RT>display the BIOS settings (warmboot) and hangs.. After a couple or more
RT>resets, I did pass memory check and able to run DOS. Any ideas of fixing
my
RT>problem.

If I had to wager, I'd be betting on harddrive problems. Thing is, the
system's trying to access the MBR etcetera, failing (stiction?) and not
having enough "brains" at that point in the process to realize the
problem. Any beeps during the POST?

If it were stiction, that would explain why the thing'll start working
after a few tries.

Another possibility: I had a similar problem with a similar level of
machine a few years back, when I upgraded the video card to VGA. I
guess the card was requiring more power, & the power supply didn't have
enough left anymore to run the VGA card -and- push the drive up to
speed. Like any electric motor (AFAIK), the diskdrive motor draws more
current when it's initally spinning up. Think I fixed it by cleaning a
couple pounds of lint out of the power supply. Works now, anyway,
usually.

Have you made any changes to they machines recently -- new drives,
added components of any kind?
