Where did you hear that pkunzip for DOS is free? I checked the pkware FTP
site last week and both the older pkz204g.exe and pk250dos.exe
self-extracting distributions were there. There was no indication in either
archive that they are free. As far as I know, you still must pay $47 to
register any version of PKZip, whether for DOS or any other operating
environment or system. They also have PKZip for all flavors of Windows,
OS/2, and Linux, for the PC.
If PKZip or PKUnZip for DOS is free, tell us where to get the free one.
YOu can get PKWare's version at:
http://www.pkware.com/
or
ftp://ftp.pkware.com/
The GNU Zip and Unzip programs, PKZip compatible programs, are free, and are
available at all the usual suspect DOS file sites like simtelnet.net or
cdrom.com or garbo.uwasa.fi among many others.
PKZip is so much the standard that every single site in the world that has
archived files available for download, whether a website, FTP site, or an
old-fashioned BBS, has PKZip, usually in a self-extracting file called
pkz204g.exe or pk250dos.exe .
Pkzip is definitely one of those programs you can leave home without, but
you can't unpack about 80 percent of PC file archives without it, or a
compatible program that follows its conventions.
