I was not impressed at all with win95 but I must say I am quite impressed
with win98. granted, it does need more RAM and somewhat more disk space
(170-355 MB) but it is actually quite stable when loaded correctly and
fairly flexible. It is easy and intuitive to use and good to look at. You
can sit down and get your work done without having to mess with the
computer or learn how to operate it. I'm sick of all the M$ bashing which
completely overlooks the fact that most people who own and drive a car
can't even change a flat tire and DONT WANT TO. They feel the same about
their computer and M$ delivered to them an operating system that allows
it. At my work they have now had the win95 network in place for a year
with no major glitches outside of a hardware problem (hard drive
died). They took a course in operating the special software apps they use,
they did not have to study and memorize commands, don't have to leaf
through manuals everytime, and didn't need an expert to set up the system.
win9x loads off dos, opens dos shells, and can exit to dos, but they say
that dos is not present underneath. Also, I've heard it said right here
that DOS 7.0 isn't a real dos anyway! Whether or not it is a "real OS" and
whether you like M$ politics, there's no getting around the success or the
reason for that success, it's not marketing, it's delivering the
goods. win 98 is quality goods and the win9x line is what consumers
desire. Now, can we put this silly b*tching to rest and get back to useful
discussions about keeping old computers useful?
