Sitting alone in the computer labs at uni is relaxing: The 20-odd
computers there use their harddrives every few seconds (whenever
windows NT moves the "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to logon" window). So you
hear one a second or so. Very hypnotic.
They say NT has the lowest TCO; after a few years IMHO those
harddrives will be totally useless after this constant use. [24/7]
The alpha room [DEC unix] is always quiet, even with people in there.
64MB RAM is more than enough for these, even with other people using
them remotely [telnet etc]. The NT boxes usually use ~70MB just to
startup. That means dipping into virtual memory! I've used more than
120MB RAM on NT just by running a couple of programs.
