OK, I'll bite.  Stay away from vi.

Pico is MUCH easier to use than vi.  Highly recommended for
newbies.  If your distro installs Pine (one of the standard
mail readers) then you will automatically have pico.  Set
EDITOR="pico" and alias edit='pico' for carefree editing in
all situations.

As far as I know, Debian is the only distribution which doesn't
come with pico as standard.  However, Debian defaults to the
ae editor, which is another marvellously easy editor, ideal
for newbies.   In my book, this makes Debian much more newbie-
friendly than all the pedantic distros which default to vi.

Not on my systems.
del vi is nearly as satisfying as deltree windows
(and, yes, alias del='rm -i')
