OK so I dont need to watch movies on my Survpc, but I heard Art Bell
(he shamlessly admits this!) allude to a just prior interview with
Steven Segall that I thought might be interesting to hear. In fact,
all sorts of radio interviews are available on the net, if you have
the equippment to hear them.

So I went off to real.com and downloaded version 5 of their real audio
player software (the current version is 7). The site seemed to claim that
my:

486 75Mhz Pc with Vesa Local Bus
win 3.11
internet explorer 3.02
30 Megs of ram

might be able to make the software go, even though I do not have a sound
card. If the miracle happened I would hear voices coming out of my tiny
little PC speaker, that usually only makes beeps -- well enough to
understand the words?

I tried it. The miracle did not happen. I Installed the real player for
win 3.1 OK. But it would not even play its sample file: this error,
that error, ``poor system performance'', no sound even when no error
messages.

So I now wonder: what extra hardware would I need to play real audio or
other voice formats on my survpc? I suspect I would need a 16 bit sound
card to do some of the uncompressing, storage, and processing? I am
reluctant to spend a lot of money on one of those ``multi-media'' kits,
when I can get an entire new computer for about $500. Might one
even be able to play audio somehow using DOS?

The questions come from a technical beginner in the domain of radio
and streaming audio for PCs. Thanks for any hints.
