Quite a few motherboards only have those tiny pathetic piezoelectric
speakers that make the standard PC speaker sound like hifi. Packard
Bell used those piezo speakers on their 486 mobos and had a connector
and jumper to connect a regular speaker and disable the mobo mounted
piezo speaker. This was one of their system "upgrades" in the
documentation I got from them.
