Hi, Mike. I noticed you saying to Karen:
KL>well i am on the hunt for a good fax program for DOS.
MM> There's no better fax program for DOS than BGFax.
MM> The current version is 1.70t.
MM> It is aimed primarily at BBS sysops, but can be used in any setup.
Yep, so far so good.
MM> I use it both on 1 machine permanently in "Host Mode" as a fax receive
MM> machine, and on another computer as my Fax Send program.
MM> It can send either pure ascii text, PCL (HP Laser format) or TIFF
MM> files.
I host the support maillist for BGFax off my BBS ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
List is also gated to the BGFAX echo on Fidonet, but the programmer
participates via the maillist, I think.
I dunno about PCL files, but it will send PCX files, and TIFF/Class F
files, and (I think, from memory) QFX files (Quicklink fax format). It
will also recieve in (from memory) all three of those formats.
If you have a scanner, you can save scanned documents as appropriately-
sized PCX files and have BGFax send them.
MM> It is very flexible and very reliable.
That part you've got right. I created a whole document-digitizing
system using BGFax, a SurvPC (286-12 Compaq with two 20-meg HDs) and a
conventional Fax machine, along with a little finagling to get the files
to a system that has the space to store the documents. Each page is
about 25k, so that's about 40 pages a Meg, 40,000 a Gig. And using
BGFax, it's all done with hardware we already had.
Don't have to dedicate the modem on my bigger machine to catch faxes.
And the DOS-based nature of BGFax allows for a bit of "fancy footwork"
with batch processing and with my other DOS-based tools.
I have a database of all the Stewards in the Union where I work,
including Fax numbers where available. I set up a "Report" format that
basically prints to a batchfile, calling BGFax to send a fax to each of
their numbers.
Then when I have a flyer to send to all of them, I scan a copy to a PCX
file, shrink it down to 1728 pixels wide and use BGFax to send it out en
masse. Can get docs distributed in an hour that would take a whole day
hand-feeding a regular fax machine or several days waiting for them to
come get them.
BGFax also has a utility (sort of a special version) included called
Polyfax, which is for exactly that, and which is very flexible and
powerful, and which I never use. <grin>
Yes, it is very flexible, very simple to set up and use and very
effective. I recommend it highly. Could you tell? <g>
