Hello Brent,
Thank you very much for your very informative reply to my question
about changes from PC-DOS 6.1. to 6.3. Much appreciated! I will
install 6.3 soon, I'm just waiting for a new disk which I just bought
second hand (should be in the mail now). Will migrate all my data,
and it think this will be a good time to install new OS too.
Your description of the changes from 6.1 to 6.3 was very
accurate compared to what IBM emphasis in their announcement,
which I eventually found. It is comforting to hear from someone who
actually used the version I'm about to install. Very nice to know that
PC-DOS 6.3 is actually an upgrade, not a downgrade :)
Regarding disk compression: I already have Stacker 4.1, so I will not
be using SStore. Stacker 4.1 have served me well for years now,
although as I acquire more disk space - I will not use it as much as
I have in the past. Will not be part of my default config, but used
on "removable" harddisk(s) where I will store various data.
Since Stacker will preload, I think I can avoid loading it just by
renaming the hidden "DBLSPACE.BIN" in the root - and then
rename it back and reboot when I want to run the alternative
configuration to mount any of the "removable". (I have some nice
mounting brackets (boxes) that makes it easy to swap the second HD on
this computer, so I can use my old/small disks for various backup.
And with Stacker, even the smallest drive comes to good use... :)
Btw: Even if Stacker have been solid, never lost a file with it, just
in case - I once downloaded from Stac a file called REPAIR.EXE. It
will fix or recover stacvolfile headers - if needed (never have). Can
send you (anyone) a copy if you like, nice to have - just in
case (small file, 36.7 kb zipped).
I have also downloaded the fix for PC-DOS 6.3 - so now I am just
waiting for my new disk to arrive....:)
All the best,
Bjrn
