And there's by and by some data accumulating over the last years which
show that even the socalled "green" 'puters are far off the mark; one
account given for Germany was that two of the country's 1000-MW
nuclear stations turn just for the "sleep" current of all sorts of
machines in "stand-by" state (TVs, faxes, 'puters and the rest).

This is comparably easy to measure (or even to calculate). The idling
machine would use about 8 to 10 % of the nominal value of the power unit,
i.e. around 20 VA, the monitor would use much more (even in "sleep"
mode) if not really shut off.
