I can't provide any great detail, other than to say that any microwave with
a broken or damaged door should be suspect and tested. If your grandparents
unit passed testing, and hasn't been damaged since, then it's PROBABLY OK.
Of course, there's lots of debate whether microwave ovens are safe in
general (apparently staring closely into one during operation is bad for the
eyes), and I suspect older units are far more "dirty" than newer units. And
more debate on the use of plastic containers in them.
Same with issues arise with wireless/cellular phones. In general, I work on
the principal that un-necessary exposure doesn't HELP me any, so try to keep
a few feet away wherever possible. I'm looking into a hands-free gizmo to
keep my PCS phone a few feet from my skull when possible.
