There are modem commands for turning the sound off completely, and others
just for reducing the volume of the sound, and still others that allow
the modem sounds to be heard only when certain kinds of communications
are occurring.
L0 (a zero) Set low speaker volume
L1 Set low speaker volume
L2 Set medium speaker volume
L3 Set high speaker volume
M0 (a zero) Turn speaker off
M1 Turn speaker on during handshaking and
turn speaker off when receiving carrier
M2 Turn speaker on during handshaking and while receiving carrier
M3 Turn speaker off during dialing and receiving carrier and turn speaker
on during answering
Modem commands are called AT commands. They may be invoked from the command
line if preceded by the DOS "echo" command and followed by a greater than
symbol ">" to direct output to a specified comport. The AT commands may be
invoked from the command line only if you have a real modem, not a WinModem.
Example: If you have a real modem on COM1, you may silently dial the police
by entering the following command at the DOS command line:
echo ATMODT911 > COM1
Some homes and businesses, especially banks and convenience stores, having
computers and modems, have a batch file written especially for that purpose,
and to be used only in certain kinds of emergency situations.
