Popular usage is split.
The "G" stands for "Graphics" (actually it
means "Graphics Interchange Format") and,
accordingly, the correct pronunciation would
be GIFF (hard "G" as in guy, girl, gum),
BUT ...
In keeping with the typical "what were they
thinking" phenomena of technologies, please
see the page at http://www.whatis.com/gif.htm
where it is stated that the "original and
preferred pronunciation is DJIF" (that would be
the soft "G" as in general, ginger, and gerk).
