Not really. If you want to infect another program (i.e. be a virus) you
have to have root, or equivalent superuser write access, unless you restrict
yourself to a user's own executables. Worms would be slightly more viable
for a user, but to be really effective they need to be run with the system
and resist attempts to be removed easily - root access helps with this a
great deal.

Well, yes, but a Trojan isn't a virus. A real virus lives in any executable
(or disk) it wants to, and spreads to all others. To infect an existing
program on a UNIX, it'd have to have write access to the binary. A trojan
would be a way to get the thing onto the system, but you need to get the
trojan there in the first place. It's not possible to do this accurately
and quickly, which would restrict the propagation of the virus.
