DISCLAIMER: The following reply is not a flame. Thank you.

Perhaps you are uneducated then. I will attempt to enlighten
you. In the olden days, and even now, with DOS, some virus
scanners can be run directly from the command line, and can also
be run with a batch file. They do not have to run TSR, they do
not run "in the background" constantly like they do with Windows.
(I don't know about Linux, but I'm sure there are people here who
do.)

So with DOS the scenario goes something like this:
1) Download a file.
2) Unzip it.
3) Scan it.
4) Run it.
5) Scan it again. (Note: The reason for the second scan is that
some viruses cannot be detected until the executable is run.
6) Periodic (weekly works for me) scans just in case. My scanner
is the free-for-individual-use FPROT and it takes about 2
minutes to scan all my drives. It scans a single directory in
   the blink of an eye.

Further notes: You should be aware that in the olden days I am
speaking of with BBS's there was no email, only message bases,
and messages were plain text, and viruses could not be put into a
plain text file.

Thank You,
Boanne
