On my old 486DX2-66 it played mp3s at half quality, perfect. There
was only JUST not enough power to play it at full quality. I also
listened to streaming audio using the same program.

Which was? mpg123 under linux. :-) Command line mp3 player.
There are many front-ends around for it; search for "mpg123".

Oh, it had a Media Vision Jazz 16 sound card, one of the most
Sound Blaster compatible non-Creative cards there was (AFAIK).
