It's a contextual issue, for safety sake, call unknown women "women" and
let them call themselves girl first, after you've gotten to know them
you'll know when girl is not derogatory.  In the contest of "girls can't do
that sort of work" it is as offensive as it can get and I am sure, were
boanne still participating, she may well also have called you on it in her
own way.
Remember, the next generation of females is listening and believing you
when you say what they can or cannot do, so teach them to try anything they
want to.  Who knows where programming may go if the female mindset gets
equal play in it's design?
