I know of a number of people who together run and host their own private
usenet with some twenty groups and all are passworded together so only
persons with valid login and password may log into any of the servers and
all servers share each other's feed and account information. It's like a
gated community in cyberspace and it's entirely hosted on private
systems. One server has a dedicated 56K line, another has a real T1 and a
couple other have cable connections. Most run their servers on high gaming
ports to hide the activity from their ISP as many ISPs will not permit
servers due to the potential for spammers to hack in and use that server as
a spam point and disguise their true origin. If you can hide from even
your isp, however, you may assume you are good enough to be secure.
I believe it is Dnews they use.
