Yes, I bought a soldering tool set (30-watt), with the help of my
visiting Dad and the electrician's approval. At my Dad's suggestion,
I'm going to first practice soldering on the same type of chips on
a worthless old board. There are also some nice instructions/tips
on soldering electronic components that came with the soldering iron.

I'll be seeing the electrician a few more times, too, to help. If I
can't get the hang of it, however, I suppose I could take the XT
motherboard and IC socket to someone else (and pay a fee, of course)
to have it done. I'm not soldering the chip itself, just the socket.
The timer chip is bad, so I don't care about working directly on it to
remove it.
