Hello:

Concerning the unsoldering and removal of IC chips, here is another
neat trick, and one of my favorite techniques:

First trim off the pins as close to the board as possible by
using some nibbers. If you don't have the right tool, use the
corners of the cutting blades of a pair of good toenail clippers.

Find some way to clamp and suspend some kind of a weight onto the
chip you are trying to remove. Hold the board upside down as you
unsolder the pins. The weight will produce a downward force on the
chip and it will tend to pull it out of the board as the solder melts
away and loosens. As you are soldering, use a suction syringe to
suck the molten solder away from the holes and the pins. You can buy
a suction syringe device designed especially for this purpose at Radio
Shack and other electronics supply stores. I prefer the spring-loaded
cylinder type over the squeeze-bulb type. The former produces a much
more forceful and instantaneous suction. Also the syringe opening is
automatically cleaned upon re-cocking the spring. As the holding
force of the melting and diminishing solder begins to give way,
then the chip will be gradually pulled down and away from the board by
the gravity of its added weight. Eventually the chip will fall to the
floor. Free at last!

All the best,

Sam Heywood
