All I want to say is that "I am in love!"! In love, with FastFlip 2.18;
It really is a fantastic experience.
I've been using it for about 2 months. I always load it for 10 DOS
pages! Each page needing 800K bytes of XMS memory; for a total of 8MB
XMS memory. I'm running a Toshiba T4800CT notebook computer,
486DX4-75MHz processor, 40MB RAM, 2.1 GB hard drive, 14.4 Kbps modem and
MS-DOS 6.21.
One of the main programs I use is Arachne 1.66. Of big interest to users
of Arachne, I have made six installations of Arachne 1.66 in six
separate directories on my HDD. I keep 6 batch files in my root dir to
enable easy start up of any one: c:\ara.bat, c:\ara_.bat, c:\ara^.bat,
c:\ara%.bat, c:\ara&.bat, and c:\ara#.bat. (The 6 directories are named
c:\bw\arcn166, c:\bw\arcn166_, c:\bw\arcn166^, etc.)
What I'm leading up to explaining is: Why a FastFlip task switcher is so
great, so lovely! Well, I like to have my different Arachnes' caches
(and histories) loaded up from different types of searching from
different (past) internet sessions. I typically have about 10 MB cached
up in each of my 6 Arachnes. This facilitates much offline browsing.
(Only 1 Arachne can be online, at any one time, in my setup.)
And then with FastFlip, I usually have 2 editors loaded (Boxer,
EZX-Word, WordStar 3.0) AT THE SAME TIME with 1 or 2 spread sheets
(ASEASY, EZ-Spread) AT THE SAVE TIME with 2 or 3 Arachnes AT THE SAME
TIME with SCRAPS Free-form text (note) database, AT THE SAME TIME with
Envision DeskTop Publisher.
In all up to 10 DOS pages AT THE SAME TIME. And believe me, the
switching speed is most definitely 'fast'. It seems to only take
something like 1/4 second to switch from task to task.
As I'm afraid this post is becoming too long I will end off with a brief
mention of a few particulars of how my FastFlip system is setup-- so as
to perhaps explain why, for me, it is working so well. (You or some
other post mentioned that they thought or heard that FastFlip was
unstable or glitchy?)
Well, I haven't finished trying to optimize my system. But I noted at
first, my setup was locking up VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY frequently. I
tried to see if it was a driver conflict or something else.
I remember I was sick and tired of the lockups every few minutes; then,
in my config.sys & autoexec.bat, I removed any LOADHIGH (or LH)
commands, one after the next with testing in between.
I'm running MicroSoft EMM386 /highscan, HIMEM.SYS, SMARTDRIVE with 4MB
disk cache, CTMOUSE version ?.??, US Robotics PCMCIA modem driver,
FastFlip 2.18, and 2 or 3 other tiny, minor things.
Of interest, I'm just near the point of not having enough conventional
memory to run Arachne with its built in Dialer & PPP. In fact I only
have about 2500 bytes to spare. In other words, if I would load
ANSI.SYS, which requires about 4K bytes, I wouldn't be able to go online
with Arachne. It's that close.
Well, to make a long story short, I don't remember all that happened
because I had to get my system up and running to do some real work. So,
my stable system right now is running _ALL_ IN CONVENTIONAL MEMORY. No
UMB's are being used. NOTHING IS LOADED HIGH!
Of course at a later date I will attempt to get more conventional
memory. But for now, I'm getting real work accomplished. I'm in FastFlip
heaven!
