It makes no difference to Linux whether it is a
partition on the same drive or a different drive.

/dev/hda is the master drive on the primary controller
/dev/hdb is the slave drive on the primary controller
/dev/hdc is the master drive on the secondary controller
/dev/hdd is the slave drive on the secondary controller

If the drive in question is not partitioned, then the
partition number is 1. So, if you want to mount an
unpartitioned primary-master IDE drive, use /dev/hda1

Perhaps your KDE tool defaults to a read-only mount.
Obviously this is safer than read-write access.
