I can remember running into this problem. There are some editors that'll let
you edit a file larger than memory without having to chop it up.
Apropos the recent thread on Linux/Unix editors, there's one for DOS called
Elvis that's a knock-off of vi for the truly masochistic. From the info page
(http://www.fh-wedel.de/elvis/manual/elvis.html): "Like vi/ex, Elvis stores
most of the text in a temporary file, instead of RAM. This allows it to edit
files that are too large to fit in a single process' data space. Also, the
edit buffer can survive a power failure or crash."
I'm sure there are more user friendly editors with such capabilities, but
though I'd point out one that I'm familiar with. I stumbled on a nice
collection of DOS stuff, including editors, at:
