There are dozens of DOS editors, many of them very small, which can edit
large files, even files of sizes limited only by the capacity of the hard
disks that hold them, regardless of the amount of memory available to the
editor. You can find them on the simtelnet mirrors. Point your FTP
client to:

ftp://ftp.simtel.net/

and follow the log-in procedure, which usually involves pressing the
<enter> key each time it prompts you for your log-in name and password.
This accepts your e-mail address as log-in and "annonymous" as your
password. When the first directory list presents itself, go down through
the directory structure to:
pub/simtelnet/msdos/editor
and look at the index, picking out those editors who's entries mention
them having capacity to edit large files.

In the directories under pub/simtelnet/msdos/
that deal with fileutil
dirutil
and other such directories, you will find all kinds of programs for
splitting files and recombining them.

There are litterally dozens of them in all categories; it's still one of
the best places to find lots of freeware and cheap shareware programs and
utilities for DOS. If you like other operating systems, just replace the
msdos part of the directory tree with windows win95 mac unix, or
whatever suits your fancy.
