I can't say that I've tried them, although it was nice seeing Andrew
Tannenbaum's name again on the Amoeba web site. You might want to look at
Mosix (http://www.mosix.cs.huji.ac.il/ and others). I've heard good things
about Mosix, and it offers the advantage that it allows existing Linux
programs to run un-modified, giving you access to a huge and well maintained
library of software. It's also free. However, I suspect to do anything
realistic with it, you'd be looking at a higher class of machines.
The thing that always brings me down on approaches like this is the amount
of power consumed and heat generated by any more than a handful of machines.
I dearly love my old PCs (and pre-PC machines), but it's simply too wasteful
to keep them all running constantly. Given the recent power problems in
California and the heat we get here in Phoenix during the summer, I've
decided to go with a single system with increased horsepower. However, with
that we quickly move off-topic for this list.
