You might want (or need) to dig into the Client-To-Host
Communication section and security sections here
<http://www.imc.org/rfcs.html> to figure this one out (what the host
expects and acknowledge as valid answer etc)
A quick way: Take the command string/name you receive from the host,
like "auth CRAM-MD5"
and search the above site via www.google.com.
Say you enter
"auth CRAM-MD5" site:www.imc.org
to search the imc site for an exact match. This might(!) take you
right to the document(s) that describe this kind of
authentication.

I believe latest (and last) 16-bit version of Pegasus Mail is
actually very much up to date on various authentication
schemes, and always ahead of Eudora (!). ( 16 bit version also has
IMAP support - although limited version that has to be
installed/invoked separately). If so you might be in luck, i.e it
knows how to handle the request from the server properly, and might
even print out the encrypted id/aut string in plain text when
run in debug mode. Worth a try if you don't mind the download,
Pegasus Mail for Windows 3.1 w16-312b.exe
(as said I use ver 2.55 my self, older 16-bit version)
