MS-DOS Compatibilty Mode?

I just found that my D: drive is working in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode.
What is that and why?  It is a Fat32 drive.  Is it because it is on an
unrecognized SCSI card?  Is this why the drive is so dog slow in this
system?
