A few thoughts though:
1. They WERE free. Yeah, a full system would've been nice, but that's more
generous than most companies I know. Although a copy of Win9x might exceed
the cost of the PC they surely came out ahead!
2. There are FREE OS alternatives readily available. If there were machines
of somewhat recent vintage, they could still have done quite a bit with
them.
3. They can always sell them on e-Bay for some quick cash. :)
Again, we pretty much have to recommend drives be either destroyed or wiped
due to security concerns. More than one company has suffered to embarassment
of donating PCs, only to have the recipients divulge confidential data they
found on the drives. A buddy of mine even found a copy of his own resume on
a machine he bought from his company.
I hate to think that the attitude that "a computer without Windows is
useless" is pervasive!
