If you kept on reading, did you not see where I said to
go ahead and give blood? But is it not obvious, that by
the time someone in kansas gives blood, and they can ship
it by _truck_ (remember no planes?) to NYC, whoever it
would have been intended for would be either dead or past
the crisis?

I have suggested a similar unintended consequence in
Israel on political lists. The Israelis have started
to use face recognition software, already installed at
Gaza. And, perhaps you recall when a mob killed an
israeli soldier after throwing him out the jailhouse
window? And then the Israelis used the video tape of
that to identify some of the Palestinians involved.
There is also the incident at an Israeli hospital where
a guard would not let a Hassidic Jew in... [because the
software saw thru his disguise, and recognized him as
a Palestinian terrorist] who then blew himself up, but
only wounded two approaching policemen.. rather than
the dozens of Jews inside the waiting room.
Now... obviously, the Jews have equipment which has been
thoroughly _tested_, and demonstrably effective. which
means that the Palestinian terrorists are enriching the
Israeli security business, and increasing their global
sales significantly.
As for the Y2K hillbillies, we own the healthfood store
in Leslie AR, and sales of beans and grains and herbs
have been jumping, even before this disaster. Their
response is not all that rational either. But we smile,
and take it to the bank.
Likewise, I see where the local gas prices jumped by 50%.
What the hell does that have to do with the terrorism?
Did they hit a refinerery I dont know about, or is this
yet another example of an emotional response. Whatever,
no doubt the gasoline dealers are happy. Somebody told
me, that to the Bush administration, 'diversity' means
a president and vice president from different oil companies.
But if the Red Cross, or the government, or any other large
organization, is going to pander to the panic, then it'd be
expected that other parts of the economy would follow their
example. Right down to the local level. The country store
owner out here told me that a lady showed up with five
brand new 5 gallon gas cans today to fill up. His gas was
only 1.70$/gallon. He commented that he wanted to save gas
for the guys out here running tractors to manage their
livestock and fields. There is another hay crop to be cut
and baled. If this kind of hysteria cuts into the operation
of agriculture, you can expect to see food prices go...
If you actually use the computers to crunch the numbers,
you find that the office towers are monuments to egoism, but
not efficient. The construction of office parks in fringe
suburbs reflects this fact, where the cost/foot of space is
a fraction of that in an office tower, and where the cost
and time of the commute is much lower. But that cost is yet
another order of magnitude lower than the pc in the back
bedroom of trained office personnel, with no commute cost
at all. It will be interesting to see what business was
done by former tenants of the twin towers who are trying to
use their home pcs to service the needs of clients and the
organizations which rented that expensive space.
If we can get past the immediate panic and emotional outrage,
we may come out of this, as the Israelis, in even better
economic shape than before the terrorism. _IF_.
