The XT systems do not have a reference disk. You must set jumpers on the
main board to tell it what floppy drives are installed and how much RAM
is installed. Each XT main board has specific jumpers to set things it
may offer that are specific to the main board.
Moving those jumper to CMOS on the AT was a big deal at the time and
allowed for many more settings that would have taken up a huge amount of
space on the main board had they been implemented as jumpers.
Refer to whatever documentation you can find for the XT to see the
jumper settings. Since it is a real IBM you will find that information
documented ad nauseum in books on hardware from the period available at
just about any public library.
