Basically, you're correct. The cable company here assigns IP addresses dynamically with dhcp, which seems to be the norm. WATT-32 apps support configuration via dhcp; I don't remember if the original wattcp does or not. Some cable internet providers use PPPoE though, with which I have no experience. I did turn up a DOS packet driver for it once, which suggests it can be done too. The normal packet driver would simply be one for your particular NIC, obtainable from Crynwr or the manufacturer.
