Hi Howard,

About "16-Bit OS clients dealing with Graphics/NewsGroups", then
"Access to this mail-list thru a .QWK Off-Line Mail Reader" of January
27 and 28, respectively:

DB> ...Arachne lacks USENET...
MS> ...perhaps you happen to still use `Arachne' to access the graphic

HE> I found the following free programs useful: piclab, improces...
HE> ...at R. Green's freeware site. Piclab should be on Simtel/Garbo.

That's right. I could find the related archives from the Garbo and
Green ~WEB~ sites, i thank you! :) It was there, more specifically at:

     ftp://ftp.tu-dresden.de/pub/soft/SimTel/msdos/graphics/piclb193.zip
(i find those northern European people have speedy mirror sites)

     ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/graphics/improc42.zip
      (a favourite too)...

What's more, your mention about Green lead to http://dosware.nfo.sk
and that's where i got `GraphX v2.00', which is the closest thing to the
well known `Windows' BitMap Paint tool that i ever seen (i mean, not for
its user interface but for the grid-size & ease of use). `GfX2b965.ZIP'
is only 472 Kb in size, that's less than the two others put together and
i gain much much more in conviviality, appart from some 32 Kilo-Bytes...

                                  8-)

I'm still learning, i go from `PainBrush' to `GrafX' and back again
with a stop at `Grapics VP Delux v3.5' which offers a posterize function
that i find to be user-frienly - and i like this later feature a lot: i
love its preview option!... I'm starting to get there, i'm now having a
set of graphics with color palettes which look like what i need more and
more; poterizing seems to reject unused colors and i get more shades, i
even began to experiment with palette/true-color format conversions. :)
Among other features i found interesting, `GifWeb' has no bitmap tool of
its own but it can remove the transparency flag, a problem for me when i
use `PaintBrush' (i like it for cutting the graphic to size)... Before,
i had to UpLoad the file and to visit TransWEB (www.mit.edu:8001/tweb/)!

                                  %-o

`Image Magician v1.4' has multiple nag screens but it works and one
might use it to pickup the colour of an individual pixel and copy it for
addition to a palette. Now that i'm starting to put the puzzle together
it has come to me that i should create a sample graphic using the colors
which i selected inside `Image Magician' and then i might want to see if
posterizing to 16 bits will get me a graphic file with a range of shaded
greys with all-purpose colours to go with it (might be a good Start?)...

`PicLab' is precious to me since it's available as an `XT' program,
`ImProces' would be nice on a LEGACY machine (with ~CGA~) but i'm afraid
i'm in love with `GrafX' at the moment...  and source-code is available;
i wouldn't try to "enhance" its code but i may like it better in French!

                                  ;-)

Well, with these secrets unleashed i now have a better perspective.

                                   :)

     I visited the shellworld.net and freeshell.org ~WEB~ pages, i guess
i can add nyx.net to the list (i'll put them on my own site eventually)!

                                  8-)

Oups! Then i'm afraid it won't be an easy ride. Look what i have:

********************************************************[ `Commo.CAP' ]*

Received: from...

                                                                      |
...[message body]... |
. |
**********************************************************************|*
                                   .----------------------------------'
I'm forced to conclude that this probably isn't what i'd need! :-(

The `NetMail for DOS v2.12' documentation mentions Unix and my very
limited experience of Unix made me notice the terminating dot but that's
not making this ~TelNet~ capture a "Unix MailBox" message, i guess. %-)

HE> ...I don't see the point in converting them to SOUP...

I'd rather not myself. Essentially, the .QWK interface lists those
messages individually, in sorted order and with color-coded areas... It
is much less distracting for me because i don't get to manage everything
with `Multi-Mail', or some other suitable ~OLMR~ and BBS door... I tend
to forget the things (which i wanted to do) with the present format. :(

Euh... Actually, i can think of even more basic considerations: i
just get less time for the contents while i'm kept busy with the medium.

HE> ...in Linux, I use... ...ztelnet...
MS> Would you think it's capable of "sharing" a ~TelNet~ session with my
MS> old friend `Kermit' (or `C-Kermit' in that case, might i say)?...
HE> External file transfer protocols can also be used...

If both the ~TelNet~ and `ZMoDem' protocols are internal but with a
provision for external file transfer protocols such as `C-Kermit' then i
wouldn't be surprized if the later only works for DialUp calls... I can
understand that `ZTelNet' is very much like `MiniCOM', unless it will be
possible to use it as a ~TelNet~ "shim" for something like`C-Kermit' and
in that case that would make it a lot more interresting in my eye. As i
wrote, with `MiniCOM' i must also have a Vitual ~TelNet MoDem "shim" but
you seem to make a distinction as to what `ZTelNet' actually is and that
makes me ask you this other question: what's this `ZTelNet', precisely?

                                  :^o

HE> ...<http://www.ncf.ca/~ag221/>...

Ho, i wanted you to know that i checked your "DOS TCP/IP Resources"
link awhile ago (resource.html) and i'm sorry to say that the "I live in
Siberia" link (http://stud1.tuwien.ac.at/~e8926506/siberia.htm) is down.

Luckily for me, i have a few copies of this instructive document...

                                   :)

I recall it was on your site that i discovered it for the 1st time,
it's only natural that i let you know about this unfortunate finding!...

I wish you to have a nice day! and the same goes for every body!!!

                                                    Salutations, :)
