Readers of this forum may not be aware of the operating system known as BeOS which was recently bought out by Palm. The latter appears to have no interest in further developing or marketing this operating system, however, a number of teams within the free/open software movement are cloning the OS as an alternative to proprietary systems. BeOS has a number of very attractive features for the development context: *Extremely fast performance on VERY low end hardware. * A very good, intuitive graphic user interface. * Very compact with very fast boot up. Again, older, smaller hard drives work well. * Stability which rivals Linux/Unix. *Simple and fast installation process. Like Linux, BeOS has problems supporting the array of hardware devices out there and like most new operating systems, it lacks a broad application base. A combination of Linux in the network and server role combined with BeOS in the desktop role where the user's skillbase is much lower, would seem to be ideal solution for a lot of contexts. The OpenBeOS development effort in its early days and it may be appropriate for readers of this forum to maintain links and/or provide support where appropriate. Certainly, the chance to represent the development context in the gestation of this operating system is an important opportunity. Sourceforge has information on the project: http://open-beos.sourceforge.net/proj.php The OpenBeOS server was down at the time of posting: www.openbeos.org but will hopefully be up soon.
