Hiya Lists!
Just remembered...NAVC is also offered (or was anyway) from
Symantec as "public service" for free download from their
website, as well as being part of Norton Antivirus for DOS/Win3X.
It is command-line only, but can be updated with the most recent
releases of Symantecs Intelligent Updater. The other tool I
have is one I downloaded some 5 years ago, a similar tool but
for Windows 95, maybe NT???, a "GUI" scanner, called NAVSCAN32,
and it is also free. Don't know if it is still available from
Symantec web site or not though. Again, the definiton files
are updated using the Intelligent Updater. These 2 scanners
as well as NAV for DOS/Win3X and older releases of Norton
Utilities for Win95 use the "16 bit updater", which is normally
named in a fashion using the month+date+i+16.exe, such as the
one released for September 25, 2002, the filename for the
Intelligent Updater is 0925i16.exe. Download this file after
you install your antivirus scanner and your definition files will
be current. Note that these 2 scanners do not contain a resident
or "TSR" component for "real-time" alerts. They can scan, clean
and disinfect files and systems though. If a person did not
have any protection, at least with one of these they could
scan a downloaded file prior to execution. NAVSCN32.EXE is
a bit over 2 megs, NAVC1098.EXE is a bit over 1 meg, so I
could upload both installers to the public site at tmonroe.com
if the group thinks they may find these utilities useful.
Again, these were freeware versions, released publicy as a
"public service" by Symantec. I could also tell someone how
they could get a full installation of the older version 3 of
NAV for DOS/Win3X, but with version 4 already released and
available, now from tmonroe, the version 3 is not recommended,
not even by me, because the engine in version 3 cannot handle
some of the newer email type trojan/viruses. But, if someone
really does want version 3, the 16 bit, let me know. Final
note about version 3---the DOS TSR, NAVTSR in this version
is permanently "broken" according to Symantec. I can confirm
it doesn't work well at all, and will freeze almost any machine
I attempt to run it on. On the other hand, the Windows 3.X
real-time checker still works...just not as completely as
version 4.
