It works fine on mine as well, My thought was more to eliminate some of
the more general purpose stuff and add some notebook specific stuff,
PCMCIA mostly.

This was a mistake, I meant to say most old notebooks don't, many more
recent models do.

Neither does mine. I am currently using and old PCMCIA ethernet/modem
card, and it works fine with the stock BasicLinux and Slackware 3.5 pcmcia
file. If I could get a wireless card that would work with it I wouldn't be
doing all of this.
