You keep insisting it's vegetarian! I say (keeping the *really* bad
analogy in play) it's more like weight reduction. OK, the whole analogy
is silly, but so's this "issue".

Well, a bit like the brain and the heart arguing. One without the other
is less, whether they "like" it or not.

It's primarily an issue for building standardized images to allow new
systems of varying type and vintage to be added. Just as with BL, there
are choices to be made as to what goes onto the systems. Again, this has
as much to do with lack of technical talent resources, but it's still a
big challenge. Our LUG -- fortunately -- has a number of folks who like
this sort of challenge. There's now a non-profit org associated with the
LUG that takes on projecst on behalf of schools, non-profits etc. In
situations where a few individuals can make a decision free of politics,
quite a bit happens. For the larger school systems though, Microsoft
usually shows up and "gives" them loads of software.

Although the systems used are not truly Surv-class according to some, it
is an effort to avoid wasteful replacement of fully functional hardware
based solely on OS and application demands.
