which kernel do you use? I had some trouble after switching to 2.2.x
which device do you print to? did you accidently use the wrong /dev/lp??

try to ´cat textfile >/dev/lp0´ and look for reaction. (next, try lp1
and lp2)

is there anything helpful in /var/log/messages like:
Mar 13 10:48:04 marvin modprobe: can't locate module parport_lowlevel

so the online signal is not sensed.
this reminds me a bit to my problem (2.2.3 kernel) In my case, some
parameters for my printer module were missing in conf.modules:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378
